If you want to go down that path, they're no more advanced than the other. Canon is used by its fair share of professionals as well, and at that level of quality, most of the noticable quality differences come from the lens on the camera, not the camera itself.
That being said, I cannot stand how Nikons feel in my hand. I much prefer the feel of Canon, thus my choice in both film and digital cameras.
